We are @TheBikepack, a “pro-everything cycling” Instagram community with one goal.. to get more people in the saddle and this is an adventure journal from our breathtaking Norway adventure, we are happy to have you. Let the ride begin!
Today's mission: Cycle the Atlantic Ocean Road, voted Norway’s best cycle route several times and on the top of our bucket list of cycle destinations in Norway for a long time!
Further declared by The Guardian (2006) to be “the world’s best road trip destination” ranking higher than attractions such as the Himalayas. This road has also been heralded as one of the most spectacular roads in the world by the dangerousroads.org users.
This has been our top googled search for at least half a year so trust us when we say that the morning was filled with excitement.
We begin an early morning, on a next to invisible side-road in the Norwegian mountains somewhere around 7 am. It is a tranquil beginning of this Wednesday, the birds are singing and we are waking up early with the morning light over the mountain tops.
A perfect campsite, high elevation with an open view of the vast wilderness, fjords and mountains with snowy tops on one side and the mountain continuing its upwards climb on the other.
The people who know us know that we are not morning persons but this was without a doubt a good morning to wake up too!
We quickly deflated our air pressured tents, continued by eating our pre-boiled eggs as we packed the van and started prepping the bikes.
With new shaved legs and some coffee made from a homemade coffeemaker we started our ride in Molde, 60 km south of the Atlantic Ocean road!
The sun looking down with the biggest smile with no clouds to be seen in any direction! WOW could we ask for a better day to do this amazing ride!???
The Atlantic Ocean Road measures 8.3 km, equivalent to 5.2 miles, so not a monumental athletic achievement in itself which means that anyone can do this ride!
The outstanding landscape that surrounds the road it’s breathtaking!
Depending on which way you are driving or cycling the Atlantic Ocean Road, you’re going to have the mountains on one side, rising up far far away and making you dream of the view from the top of them! On the other side you’re having the ocean, clear dark blue, terrifying cold and you can almost feel all the power it contains!
We were 3 riders taking on the ride, Dennis, Johan and Tobbe! 3 totally different riders and that’s what’s so beautiful with cycling! Dennis a very dedicated cyclist, Johan training everyday and Tobbe who was doing his first ever cycle ride! You might think this was a bit unfair to Tobbe but in fact his choice of weapon made the odds more even! A Bianchi Aria e-road, perfect for him on today’s adventure and perfect for our trio, so much more fun to ride together you know!
Our smiles this day were bigger than ever, everything was perfect, the sun shining, the legs feeling great, the group stayed together, joking and fooling around with each other!
Quote from the day
Johan: how’s the e bike power feeling Tobbe? Tobbe: too damn little!
Johan: how’s your legs feeling? Tobbe: too damn much!!!!
After 40 km did Tobbe say thanks for him, jump in the van and it was up to Dennis and Johan to complete the ride!
- With mates acting like a pro team this is no problems at all, we got new water bottles when we were empty and snacks whenever we asked! /Dennis and Johan
At lunch time we arrived at the beginning of the Atlantic Ocean road, what a view! Totally worth the wait and the energy to get here!
Even if we Googled it and saw all the amazing pictures there was nothing in comparison to the real look!
We can only try to give you the same awesome feeling that we had that day but we really recommend you to go there by yourself to live the moment for yourself! It's so worth it!
The biggest and the longest of the 8 bridges, Storseisundet Bridge, took 6 year to construct, its 260 meters long and at its highest point 23 meters above the Norwegian Sea!
We rode this bridge a couple of times and got some great shots and even greater memories!
Our best suggestion is if you are in the area you must do the road! Doesn’t matter if you do it by car, bike or foot, you must see for yourself!!!
We got off our bikes, high fives and hugs with our little group and everyone cheering of joy and happiness!
A dream was fulfilled and we couldn't ask for a better way to do it, with people we love and care about, sharing the joy and fantastic feeling of completing our long gone plans!
With the view from a movie with snow covered mountains in the far east and the endless blue ocean in the west we jumped on the bikes again with new energy to continue to our campsite for the night.
We got lucky, after a moment we got a tractor in front of us so we could just slipstream behind him and in no time we found our campsite for the night!
A deserted resting area, best thing about traveling when it's off season you almost get the whole attraction for yourself so that is something we really recommend! Just don't go where we go! ;)
A perfect day also got the perfect ending with a beautiful red/ pink/ orange sunset and some cycling at the rocks close to the campsite!
That night there were only happy dreams!
Hope you enjoyed our little adventure, and if you want more theres is plenty to read about from our other adventures!
Keep the pedals spinning!
